Looking for some inspiration for vegetarian or vegan options for your menu? Bring on the Jackfruit!
Jackfruit is an exotic fruit native to South India. It has a subtle sweet and fruity flavour similar to a combination of fruits, including apples, pineapples, mangoes and bananas.
Jackfruit is packed with nutrients and contains some of almost every vitamin and mineral that you need, as well as a decent amount of protein and fibre. It is high in antioxidants.
The great thing is this fruit is often used as a meat substitute due to its texture, which is comparable to shredded meat. It also comes packaged in tins which is ideal as it is available all year round and the flesh is already prepared ready to eat or cook.
The texture of Jackfruit makes it ideal as a meat alternative for vegetarian or vegan dishes. It has a texture similar to pulled pork so it is perfect for tacos, nachos, curries, burgers etc. It takes on savoury flavours very well. Just cook with seasonings/spices/sauces to suit your dish.
If using tinned Jackfruit, once opened, keep to a 3 day shelf life in fridge.
When preparing a fresh Jackfruit, it is important to note that the white, fibrous part inside of Jackfruit is incredibly sticky, so it may be helpful to wear gloves while handling it.

Did you know that Jackfruit is the largest tree fruit in the world and an individual jackfruit can reach up to 35 kg in weight. It is the pods inside the Jackfruit that you eat (although the seeds are also edible).
