Tip of the Week

Pret a Manger has just been fined £800,000 after an employee was trapped in a walk-in freezer for 2.5 hours

The employee became trapped in the walk-in freezer due to a defective push button on the inside of the freezer door. Apparently there had been a number of recent call outs for defective or frozen push buttons on freezer doors at Pret sites.

The employee suffered from hypothermia and was taken to hospital for treatment.

It is good practice to check the push button openers on all walk-in fridges and freezers on a regular basis. Any defects need to be repaired immediately and all staff need to be made aware of any defects.

Door push buttons must also be checked as part of the annual service of equipment.

Alert

Equipment should be checked daily, serviced annually and always be kept in good repair

Weekly Fact

What is brain freeze? When you eat something very cold, the blood vessels that run between your mouth and your brain tense up trapping blood in your brain. The pressure from this causes the brain freeze.  You just need to press your tongue on the roof of your mouth to alleviate the pain.
